The system audited its own auditor

A whole-book review found the cast collapsing into the narrator’s rhetoric across thirty-four chapters, traced the cause to the rubric itself, and the fix went into the standard.

What it shows

Principle seven, turned on the instrument. The whole-book review found the cast collapsing into one rhetorical architecture and traced the collapse to the rubric: a critic that measured consistency and never measured difference. The repair was a seventh dimension and a stripped-tag test, and the cast was re-graded against them.

The principles are numbered on the method page. Cuts in the excerpts below are marked with an ellipsis in brackets; the three kinds of cut are stated on the record’s front page.

# Character Voice Critique — The Archivist

> **Status:** confirmed defect, diagnosis only. Authored 2026-06-30.
> **Question investigated:** do the characters have distinct speaking voices, or do they share
> one tone and recycle each other's phrases?
> **Verdict: CONFIRMED.** The instinct is correct. Characters are well-separated at the level of
> *diction and register* but bleed into **one shared voice at the level of rhetorical
> construction** — and in two clusters they collapse almost entirely.
> **Method:** full dialogue sweep of all speaking characters across 34 chapters (verbatim line
> extraction + per-character fingerprinting + a dedicated cross-character shared-phrase hunt),
> plus an audit of whether the style guide / critic ever policed differentiation.
> **Scope note:** this file is diagnosis. The fix (re-voicing pass) is deferred to a later stage.

## 1. The headline

> **Stripped of their `said`-tags, large stretches of dialogue could be reassigned to almost any
> principal without a reader noticing.**

That is the test the book fails. Not because the characters are interchangeable in *content* —
they argue from genuinely different positions — but because they all reach for the **same
rhetorical moves** to make their points.

The "we see them through Luca" defense is real but only partial: every line is filtered through
Luca's first-person narration, so *some* convergence is baked in. But the worst overlaps go
beyond filtering — they are **shared figures and shared constructions** (the Pope and Tan-Wei
literally share the gardener metaphor and the "die in the year it would have died" figure), which
narration-filtering does not explain.
character-voice critique · root cause
## 6. Root cause (why this happened)

Per the style-guide + critic-notes audit, **per-character voice distinctiveness was never a
tracked quality axis.** The pipeline was optimized for *one consistent house voice*:

1. **The style guide mandates a single voice, explicitly:** *"The blend is a single new
fingerprint, not three voices taking turns"* (style-guide.md:14). It gives **zero**
per-character idiolect specs — only the per-character *bibles* carry sample voices, and the
   guide never references differentiating speakers.
2. **The D1–D6 rubric has no distinctiveness dimension.** D1 rewards fidelity to the *one*
[…] fingerprint — the opposite of per-speaker variation. The critic scored
each character only against *its own bible* (D3), never against the other characters.
3. **R7 is a structural homogenizer.** *"Dialogue withholds… at least one answer must be evasive,
partial, or a counter-question… No character delivers tidy on-the-nose exposition"*
(style-guide.md:140). This imposes the *same* withholding grammar on every mouth — mandating
that everyone evade the same […] way.
4. **The critic never once flagged speaker homogenization** in 34 chapters. Its only
sameness/aphorism flags target *narrator* kitsch (over-symmetry, villain-aphorism), never
"Character A sounds like Character B."
5. **A spec'd differentiator was dropped:** Rahmani's bible promises he "quotes scripture / the
Fathers like tools he made himself" — across all 13 of his chapters he quotes **no scripture
and no Father**. The one device that would most separate his voice from the secular house
   style is absent.

So the homogenization is not an accident of execution — it is the *predicted output* of a system
that measured consistency and never measured difference.
